Your Health in UK

Looking after your health is important.

Fortunately, the UK has a well developed healthcare system with modern hospitals, dentists and local doctors in every town.

At some point whilst you are in the UK, you are likely to need a Doctor or Dentist, so you are advised to register with a local Doctor and Dentist as soon as you arrive in the UK. Don't wait until you're ill - do it straight away.

Your college or university will usually be able to help you with this.

Do you have a Student Visa?

Good news! If you are coming to study in the UK on a course lasting more than 6 months and you have a Student Visa, then you will normally be entitled to free medical and hospital treatment in the UK for the duration of your stay.

No Student Visa?

If you are a visitor to the UK for less than 6 months, then the news is not so good. You will only normally be entitled to free emergency care at a hospital Accident and Emergency Unit or a NHS Walk-in Centre.

You will have to pay for all other medical care, and therefore you are advised to arrange healthcare insurance for the duration of your stay.

Medication

If a doctor prescribes medication or drugs for you, you will have normally have to pay a few pounds to buy it at the local pharmacy.

Medication

If you need medication , there are local chemists or pharmacists in each town. Certain medicine & drugs can only be issued on prescription from a doctor , so you may need to visit your doctor before going to the pharmacy.

Sexual Health

For treatment related to sexual matters , you can visit your doctor.

If you prefer , you can visit the GUM (Genitor – Urinary Medicine clinic) at your local hospital , where an appointment is not necessary and you do not need to give your name - the service is confidential.
