IELTS and TOEFL English tests

IELTS & TOEFL

Your University or College has asked you to sit an IELTS or TOEFL test - why?

English is one of the two most widely spoken languages in the world. It is also the world’s most widely taught second language.

English is the international language of the internet and many international organisations and businesses trade using the English language. English makes it possible for people all over the world to communicate effectively.

If you choose to study in England , your command of the English language will become greater and improve faster.

But be aware that if you choose to study at one of the many UK Universities or Colleges, you will be taught using the English language, so you will need a good basic grasp and understanding of English before you begin your Course.

UK Universities, Colleges and other Institutions know this and since they don't want you to waste your time and money, they will want to assess your capability with the English Language before you start your Course.

If your first language is not English, you will probably be asked to demonstrate your ability with the English language by taking one of two tests : IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).

If you reach the required standard in these tests but you still aren't very confident on your English, don't worry. Most UK Universities offer International students a short term English language familiarity course a few weeks before the specialist courses begin. It's a good opportunity to get used to the kind of terminology you will hear on your course.

You can see which test is preferred by your prospective University or College by looking at the 'International Students' section of their website.
